Before and After “Mudroom”

Sooooo…..I thought it would be fun to kick off my blog with a project in my own house that has been in the works for quite awhile.  When I say “in the works”, I mean the idea has been swirling around in my head for months and I’ve tweaked my sketch and measurements at least a gazillion times.  Well, I finally pulled the trigger a few weeks ago and put in a call to my carpenter!

Almost three years ago when we bought our house and did the first round of renovations, the former 1970s wet bar area became an office for me and mudroom space for my kids.  But as my business grew (yay!), I realized I needed more space for catalogs, samples, files and printers so I needed to relocate my kids’ mudroom space to another spot in the house.  The back wall of my keeping room was the logical choice because it’s right off the garage.  Here’s what that space looked like when we bought the house.  The door to the garage is the one on your left.

Because that wall is a focal point and the first thing you see when you enter the room from the kitchen, it not only had to function really well but it had to look beautiful.  Every time I walked to my pantry, I  absolutely did NOT want to see my boys’ coats, sweatshirts, hats, shoes, and all that other stuff boys accumulate.  So I designed a hidden mudroom complete with lockers, hat shelves, and shoe drawers within a beautiful wall of cabinetry.  I am so happy with how it turned out.  Here are some photos.  I’m still looking for the perfect piece of art, library light and accessories to finish it off.
